Fall or winter outfit with plaid cigarette pants, black sweater, and a red umbrella

When I was contemplating solutions to my winter clothing woes, one of the things I thought I needed more of was plaid.  Now, I was initially thinking something more along the lines of a nice full skirt in something like a blue and apple green plaid over black, but when I walked into Modern Millie and saw these fantastic '70s plaid pants hanging on the rack, I just had to try them on.  I ran a quick seam down the inside and the outside of each leg to bring them into a little more of a '50s cigarette-pants silhouette, which I'll fix up a little more when I get a chance... but I wanted to get my new purchase on as quickly as possible!

The new pants were also a perfect match for my new Erstwilder brooch... and although the weather is a little less than tropical, I couldn't resist bringing him (or her?) along for the outing.  I daresay I was a little under-dressed for the cold outside, but since I was mostly headed out to take pictures it wasn't too bad.

And-- as a side note-- today's outfit is a very good example, I think, of how to create a very 1950s feeling outfit with absolutely no 1950s parts.  It's all in the silhouette and the hairdo!  Well, okay, my boots are mid-century, but that's only because that was what was nearest to the door... if it hadn't been so slushy out I would have opted for plain black pumps!
