Nine Ways to wear a Navy Skirt

I just photographed another outfit and another manicure, but I thought today I would share a little something different with you.  But first!  Today is Wednesday, so I owe you all a weigh-in.  And it looks good this week!
Current Weight: 139.6 lbs
At Last Weigh-in: 140.6 lbs
Starting Weight: 144 lbs
Weight Loss to Date:  4.4 lbs
So!  Yesterday marked the 10th appearance* of my favorite subtly patterned navy circle skirt.  Yes, that’s right, I’ve worn this thing on over (if I counted correctly) 14{d4e357baf3946b0fa3242cfa65232654f6e657a5582ee09ab921feb99801b9ac} of all of my weight loss challenge outfit posts so far!  In a way, this skirt is a good illustration of how I can make a wide array of outfits from my limited closet.  On the other hand, maybe it would make more sense to view this skirt as a ’50s flavored alternative to a pair of blue jeans.  It belongs to the same deep indigo color palate, is just as easy to wear, and is far more flattering to my hips!  Plus, it’s an excuse for me to wear petticoats, and we know how I feel about that!
*One wasn’t very well photographed, and it’s practically the same as #5 anyway.  It’s in the same post as #7 if you want to see it.

So, how do I get the most out of my skirts?  I have a handful of basic strategies:

  • Pair with a pop-y accent color.  Pick a top in a similar hue to make the accent color really stand out.  I like pairing navy with lime green, red, pink, and teal.
  • Always accessorize.  Different combinations of accessories can make the same basic pieces and color schemes look completely different.  I favor belts, gloves, bangles, flowers, and hats.
  • Throw on a t-shirt.  A cute fitted one, that is.  While I do wear my skirts with proper blouses sometimes, I often pair them with stretchy knit shirts I picked up at the mall or in Ross.
  • Tone-on-tone.  For a less casual look, pair a skirt with a blouse a shade lighter or darker in the same color family.
  • Make it a dress. Admittedly, this one is a bit of a cheat since I actually sewed both pieces.  All the same, you can achieve the same effect with a solid color skirt and blouse and a cleverly placed belt.
  • Layer up for warmth.  The onset of cooler weather doesn’t mean you have to put away your skirts!  Stockings and tights are a girl’s best friends for transitional seasons.  Light cardigans and jackets can also alter the look of the outfit while providing needed warmth.  I often wear my black lace blazer over light shirts so that I can wear them further into the fall.
And that’s how I get the most out of my closet!  I’m sure you haven’t seen the last of the navy circle skirt, either… there are still things I haven’t worn it with.  Do you have a go-to-garment that you pair with everything?
